Pastors Say Churches Need AI Guidelines. Few Have Them.

At a glance

The Need for Something

More than nine in 10 pastors (94%) say churches should have a formal AI use policy or informal guidelines.

Policy vs Guidance

Pastors are nearly evenly divided on what form guidelines should take (45% formal policy; 49% informal guidance only).

Room to Grow

Four percent of pastors say their own church has a formal policy, and 17 percent say it has informal guidance. The other 79 percent say their church has neither.

While 94 percent of U.S. Protestant pastors believe churches should have guidelines or policies for responsible AI use, only 21 percent currently have a formal policy or informal guidance in place. This significant gap highlights a critical need for church leadership teams to thoughtfully establish boundaries around AI tools used in ministry. Defining these guardrails helps maintain theological integrity and builds trust with congregants as AI adoption continues to grow.
